I want everyone to feel like they are appreciated and have some home, that’s one reason I love osdev because you can be in your own system or you can be in someone else’s system or you can shop around, mix & match components.
I’m also very cautious about releasing all of my own code though. A few people went really far out of their way to degrade me when I was writing my SL/RD kernel and a lot of it is good code (other parts need improvement) but I’m not going to open myself up to more disrespect by giving all the code away for free in an unfinished state. It was a very personal project for me, I wanted to show my mum the finished product when I’d replaced all the old code but I wasn’t able to finish it in time. I honestly did not ask anyone if they thought I was personally a loser though, I was just hoping to get some feedback about the product or suggestions of ideas.
The level of criticism I received from some people while trying to finish the kernel was extraordinary. Though others were supportive, working on projects that aren’t finished yet seems to just really trigger some people and they started making up all sorts of other shit about how I was spending that time.
So I don’t know the ultimate solution, I can’t really turn someone else’s OS into a political project – or maybe I can I guess, according to the license.
Maybe I can kind of make a mini distro for everyone though, as in different distros for different interest groups.
